Mohamed and Ahmed Ibrahim, born joined at the head, traveled from Egypt to Dallas in June 2002, the first stage of a long journey toward separate lives. Now, more than a year later and 7,000 miles from home, the 2-year-old twins have reached the brink of an operation unfathomably complex, with the outcome uncertain. For almost a year, a Dallas Morning News reporter and two photographers tracked Ahmed and Mohamed’s path to separation, observing their life in America and learning their story, told from the hearts of those closest to them. It is a tale of love and hope, of public generosity and fascination, of doctors exploring the frontiers of their craft, and of two boys unaware that they are anything other than normal.
